How to acquire your Louisiana Builders License
The following are the requirements to obtain your Louisiana Residential or Building Construction Contractors license:
- Complete the application from the Louisiana Licensing Board for Contractors. Applications can be obtained from:

- Submit the builder license application, appropriate fees, and supporting documents to the Louisiana Licensing Board for Contractors.
- Successfully complete the contractors exam that measures your knowledge of the profession.

The first step in obtaining your contractors license is completing the application from the Louisiana Licensing Board for Contractors. This should be done as soon as possible. Applications can be obtained in the following 2 ways:
- Internet - Log onto www.lslbc.louisiana.gov and click on the link that says "Forms". The application can be printed immediately.
- Telephone - Call the Louisiana Licensing Board for Contractors at (866) 310-7879. An application will be sent by mail.
The application should be returned fully completed with the supporting documentation requested by the Board. Once your application has been processed you will receive an examination date by mail and further information regarding the exam.

Taking the Builders License Exam
You have studied diligently and are ready to take the exam. You can arrive with confidence knowing that you are prepared for the questions on the test. You must present one valid form of identification when you arrive at the testing center. A driver’s license is preferred. A silent non-programmable calculator will be provided to you at the exam. The exam is a closed book exam consisting of 2 parts.
Part 1 - Business and Law
The Business and Law exam is required to obtain a Building or Residential Construction Contractor License. There are 80 questions on the Business and Law exam and you must answer at least 56 questions correctly in order to pass. The minimum passing score is 70%. You are allowed 3 hours to complete the exam.
Part 2 - Practice and Trade (varies based on the license)
The Construction Contractor test consists of 100 multiple choice questions specific to your trade. You must answer 70 questions correctly in order to pass. The minimum passing score is 70%. You will be given 4 hours to complete the exam.
The Residential Contractor test consists of 80 multiple choice questions specific to your trade. You must answer 56 questions correctly in order to pass. The minimum passing score is 70%. You will be given 4 hours to complete the exam.
Obtaining the Builders License
Once you have successfully passed the builders license exam, your test results will be sent to the Licensing Board. After you have submitted your application, the Board will then issue your contractor license to practice as a general contractor.
